Bethel Taps Familiar Face to Lead Boys Program Pending approval by the Bethel Local Schools Board of Education, the Athletic Department will name Caleb South as the next Head Boys Basketball Coach for the Bees. South is a 2018 graduate of Bethel High School and was a standout basketball and football player. Most recently, he led the girls program at his alma mater to a stellar 20-3 record in his first year as head coach, winning the inaugural Three Rivers Conference Championship as a co-champion, the first such accomplishment for the girls program in over 30 years. “When Coach South took over the girls program last year, he had one goal: hometown glory. But more than that, he wanted to use the sport that means so much to him to teach our athletes about life and the real world; what it takes to deal with adversity, how to be a good teammate, honesty, and never making excuses,” said Athletic Director Damon Smith. “He proved that he has what it takes to lead a program and guide our athletes in the core tenets of education-based athletics. As a young coach, he had some moments of growth last year and is learning valuable lessons along the way but continues to be disciplined in his approach, giving back to the district who gave so much to him. It’s a great story and one we hope continues for many years!” Coach South takes over a boys program that has finished around .500 overall and being in the mix of the conference the last few years but is poised to take it up a notch, especially with the excitement that seems to follow him. The added pressure of stepping up to Division II this season has Coach South excited and ready to get to work. When asked what getting this opportunity means to him, South said, “I want my work to speak for who I am as a person. It is the honor of my life to be named the boys coach. I have dreamed about this since I was a little kid. I am just excited to get to work!” There is no doubt there will be a little extra excitement in The Hive around Thanksgiving when basketball season starts for the Bees. The Bethel community is in for a treat with the attitude and effort that will come out of his program so be sure to get to games early this year because the last time South stepped on the court as a member of the boys program… there were very few seats remaining at tipoff! Now he hopes to help foster that excitement for the young men he will lead, creating an environment and experience for them that he had just a few years ago. Congratulations Coach South and welcome back to the Boys program!
